Museum of History of Mahiliou is housed
in the building of Town Hall, a restored 17th - century monument
of architecture. The building is sited in the historical centre of
Mahiliou, city festivities and formal parties of the city
executive committee take place in the building. Expositional halls
of the Museum are accommodated on two storeys. Objects belonging
to the period between the 10th and the beginning of the 20th
centuries and connected with the history of Mahiliou are presented
in the halls. In future it is planned to expand the museum exhibit
and acquaint the visitors with the main historical stages of the
city development, with its medieval culture, life support methods,
religion and private life. In warm seasons the visitors can go up
to the Town Hall viewing point. Beautiful panoramic view of the
city, a picturesque turn of the Dnieper and an open area at the
other side of the river open up from the viewing point. The most
resolute comers can move on upward as far as the tower clock. The
chime on the top platform of the tower is equipped with a unique
mechanism and as all other historical wheel clocks are, is
actuated using heavy poises. A museum filiation, Memorial Complex
“Buinitskaye Poley”, has been branched out in the suburb of
Mahiliou. In 1941 the 172-nd Rifle Division and Mahiliou Levy en
Masse levied holding battles against the onrushing units of
Hitlerite Wehrmacht in this locality. The period denominated later
as “days and nights of courage” was remarkably described by
Konstantin Simonov, battlefield correspondent and combatant, and a
literary star in after years.
The Museum is open from:
9.00 to 18.00.
